Amazon Tribes Handicrafts & Medicines

The Amazon Superfoods & Consultancy Company has an integrated and wholistic approach to the development of the Peruvian Amazon Region. This means that all economical, environmental & social aspects, pertaining to developing the region, also takes into account the importance of supporting the forest dwelling local and indigenous communities & tribes in order to protect their habitats and way of life. One way of achieving this is to promote and market the different handcrafted traditional articles that are produced by the various tribes.

Shipibo tribe art e.g. is one of the most representative cultural expressions of the Peruvian Amazon. Its ceramics, carvings, jewelry and textiles are made with techniques and rituals that were handed down from generation to generation. Shipibo women produce most of the handicrafts, with outstanding designs representing the Shipibo cosmology. A clear example of their originality can be seen in their textiles, having great artistic richness due to their decoration with geometric patterns and their coloring with natural polychrome dyes. It is known that the Shipibos take ayahuasca to make these handcrafted textiles and paintings, a hallucinogenic drug with which they visualize the forms and designs in their mind, and which later take shape in their final creation. Every detail of the textiles and paintings they make has a meaning that might represent rivers, lakes, animals, birds, villages and mythical beings believed to be living in the jungle. For the Shipibos, making textiles and paintings is part of a cosmology that they are proud of. It is important to note that it takes about three months on average to make e.g. a tapestry.

Some of the most attractive and famous Shipibo Kené arts are the tapestry textiles & ayahuasca inspired paintings.

Other opportunities to support the jungle dwelling communities, that are producing the beautiful handicrafts, is to order e.g. custom-made sports trophies and other articles carved from sustainably harvested precious Amazon hardwoods such as Bloodwood, Cedar, Jacaranda, Kingwood & Mahogany. Below are two examples of a golf & a tennis trophy. The design shall be decided together with each customer.

The idea with promoting custom-made wood carvings is to e.g. offer hand-made sports trophies that are unique in such a way that each and every trophy is completely different and therefore very personal as there will not exist another one the same. This is totally apart from the ready-made and mass-produced impersonal sports trophies which are normally awarded to winners and runners-up in e.g. club championships, whether it is golf, tennis or any other sport in the world. To receive a uniquely hand-carved trophy, in a precious Amazon hardwood, is guaranteed to be very appreciated indeed, especially since the profit from selling the trophies are shared with the participating communities.

AYAHUASCA BREW

Ayahuasca is a South American psychoactive and entheogenic brewed drink traditionally used both socially and as a ceremonial or shamanic spiritual medicine among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin, and more recently in Western society. The brew causes altered states of consciousness often known as "psychedelic experiences" which include visual hallucinations and altered perceptions of reality.

Ayahuasca is commonly made from the Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi) vine and the Chacruna (Psychotria viridis) shrub. Internationally, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances lists the active ingredient DMT as a schedule 1 drug, but does not control the cultivation of plants from which it can be derived, similarly to the "legal grey area" position of psychedelic plants like peyote and other mescaline-containing cacti.

The Amazon Superfoods & Consultancy Company is perfectly situated in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest to provide the highest possible Shaman-quality Ayahuasca brew for exporting to other countries. All forms of Ayahuasca are legal in Peru. Prospective clients are encouraged find out what are the legal implications in their respective countries.

KAMBÔ MEDICINE

Kambô is a healing ritual used mainly in South America and especially in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest by the Matsés tribe. It’s named after the poisonous secretions of the giant monkey frog, or Phyllomedusa bicolor. The frog secretes the substance as a defense mechanism to kill or subdue animals that try to eat it. Some healing searching humans, on the other hand, apply the substance to their body for its alleged health benefits. Indigenous people have used Kambô for centuries to heal and cleanse the body by strengthening its natural defenses and warding off bad luck. It was also believed to increase stamina and hunting skills. These days shamans and naturopathic practitioners still use it for cleansing the body of toxins, as well as treating numerous health conditions. Despite a lack of research, proponents of Kambô believe it can help with a range of conditions, including: Addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, Anxiety, Cancer, Chronic pain, Depression, Diabetes, Hepatitis, HIV and AIDS, Infections, Infertility, Rheumatism, and Vascular conditions.

Amazon Ecology is a non-profit organization that helps traditional artisans from the Peruvian Amazon to make and market innovative fair-trade handicrafts to create sustainable livelihoods for artisan families, strengthen their communities and promote forest conservation.

Their artisan partners make beautiful tree ornaments featuring birds, butterflies and other animals from the Amazon and North America from chambira palm fiber, calabash tree pods and balsa wood.  They also have a wide variety of unique accessories, decorations, housewares, and jewelry made with natural materials from the Amazon and beyond.  These include bags, barrettes, baskets, belts, bottle carriers, bracelets, cell phone pouches, earrings, guitar straps,  hot pads, maracas, and necklaces.

You can purchase these products online or at music festivals and other events in the US at www.AmazonEcology.org.  You can also buy them in person at the Garza Viva store in Iquitos, Loreto, Peru in the Galeria El Jaguar on Jr. Nauta 136 near the boullevard.  If you have questions about Amazon Ecology or are interested in wholesale purchases, please email info@amazonecology.org.

Amazon Ecology hosts skill-sharing workshops with artisans from 18 native and mestizo communities to help them improve the diversity and quality of their crafts, help artisan groups improve their leadership and marketing skills, and increase the sustainable supply of palm trees used to make the woven crafts.  Amazon Ecology is a member of the Fair Trade Federation so it reinvests part of its craft sales to help improve health, education and conservation in its partner communities.

The communities located in the Ampiyacu, Maranon, Napo, Tahuayo and Ucayali River regions are all close to major rainforest conservation areas so helping their artisans create sustainable livelihoods is a powerful strategy for protecting their rich biodiversity.
